The Ducati Scrambler 800 remains one of the most popular retro motorcycles on UK roads, offering classic styling, light handling and a lively air‑cooled twin. At Roadrunner Motorcycles in Stroud, we regularly look after these bikes, and in this service video you’ll see Steve carrying out a full annual service on a customer’s Scrambler. His steady, methodical approach shows exactly what goes into keeping a retro Ducati running smoothly all year round.
What Steve Covers During the Annual Service
The Scrambler 800 may be simple and rider‑friendly, but it still benefits from a comprehensive workshop inspection. In the video, Steve works through our full annual service checklist, including:
Engine oil and filter replacement using high‑quality oil recommended for Ducati’s air‑cooled L‑twin.
Brake system inspection, checking pad wear, disc condition and fluid levels.
Chain and sprocket assessment, followed by cleaning, adjustment and lubrication.
Electrical system testing, ensuring the charging system, battery and lighting are all healthy.
Tyre inspection, pressures, conditions and tread depth checks for safe, predictable handling.
Chassis and fastener inspection, confirming bearings, suspension and critical bolts are secure.
Service wash, removing road grime and allowing Steve to re‑inspect key areas with a clean view.
Pivot lubrication, ensuring smooth movement of stands, levers and linkages to prevent future wear.
Road test, giving Steve the chance to feel how the bike behaves under real riding conditions.
Chain Wear, Tight Links and Cush‑Drive Risk
Once the bike had been through its service wash, Steve was able to assess the chain properly without the usual build‑up of dirt and old lubricant masking its condition. After cleaning, lubricating and adjusting it, several links were still found to be excessively tight. With the chain fully exposed, cleaned & lubricated, the issue became clear: the chain was worn beyond safe use and required replacement.
A chain in this condition doesn’t just affect throttle response and rear‑wheel movement — it can also place uneven strain on the cush‑drive rubbers inside the rear hub. Tight or binding links create irregular loading as the wheel rotates, which can accelerate cush‑drive wear, cause driveline snatch and lead to vibration or premature hub damage. Identifying this during a routine service prevents far more expensive repairs later on, and the wash played a key role in revealing the problem.
Why Regular Servicing Matters
The Ducati Scrambler 800 is known for being reliable, but regular servicing is essential to keep it performing at its best. A proper annual service:
Improves safety by catching issues early.
Extends component life, saving money long‑term.
Keeps the engine running smoothly, especially on an air‑cooled twin.
Protects resale value, with a stamped service history from a trusted workshop.
At Roadrunner Motorcycles, we pride ourselves on honest, high‑quality servicing for riders across Stroud and the wider Gloucestershire area. Whether it’s a 125cc learner bike, tourer, super sports or cruiser every bike receives the same level of care and attention.

Ready for MOT and Another Year on the Road
With the service complete and the road test confirming everything felt spot‑on, Steve was able to hand the Scrambler straight over to our MOT tester. The bike passed through smoothly and left the workshop running beautifully, ready for another year of commuting, weekend blasts or exploring the Cotswolds.
